Hello again. Exciting news just finalized is the October season in Vicar Street, Dublin’s premier live music club. Entitled ‘The Paul Brady Songbook’, Paul will be playing there for virtually the month of October (23 shows, see tour dates page) and will be re-visiting all parts of his career to date. Tickets are now available online at www.vicarstreet.com .
Most exciting is the re-convening for six nights of the band he last played with in July 1978 in Dublin’s Liberty Hall when he launched his album ‘Welcome Here Kind Stranger’. In the band (called ‘The Liberty Belles’ ‘for the October shows) are Andy Irvine (vocals, mandolin, bouzouki, harmonica and hurdy gurdy), Donal Lunny (bouzouki, bass bouzouki and bodhran), Liam O’Flynn (uileann pipes and tin whistle), Paddy Glackin (fiddle) and Noel Hill (concertina). It will be great to play with them again. To accompany this re-union Paul will release a live album of the original concert, working title at the moment is ‘The Liberty Tapes’. The album will be for an initial period exclusively available from the mail order page on this site. Details will follow as soon as it is ready for release.
In addition to these traditional gigs, Paul wants to also use the month to cover a lot of earlier material he hasn’t had the chance to do lately and to invite guests from among the many players, singers, and writers he has worked with over the years.
Some nights will be with his regular band of the last few years, Liam Genockey (drums), Ian Maidman, (Bass, electric guitar, vocals and percussion) and Steve Fletcher (Keyboards and vocals). Some nights will be unplugged and acoustic, with one or two players, which lends a more intimate, though no less exciting atmosphere. Throughout the month many guests will hop on board for a song or a tune or two. To date those who are promising to come are Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, Curtis Stigers, Altan (members of), Arty McGlynn, Brian Kennedy, The Hothouse Flowers, Maura O’Connell, Sinead O’Connor, Richie Buckley, Sharon Shannon, Ronan Keating and Tim O’Brien, with several others as yet unconfirmed and some more who would prefer anonymity.
One thing, however, is that the individual guest appearances will not be advertised. It will simply be a case of whoever comes out on stage each night. Paul, himself, will not know exactly who is coming when until the shows are well up and running. The shows are the thing. The guests, the icing on the cake.
For Brady fans this is a unique opportunity to see Paul delve into all the areas of his repertoire in a way that in an ordinary touring schedule would be simply impossible. A must see! In anticipation of fans wanting to see more than one configuration/ show, plans are afoot to offer a mini season ticket at a competitive rate. Tickets are expected to sell throughout Ireland, in the UK and to several fans in USA who have expressed a desire to visit Ireland while Paul is doing shows. Now’s your chance!

Check out Paul performing and talking on the satellite channel QVC between 11.00am and midday Monday June 25th. They are fans of his and asked to do a feature. Paul will do it in Philadelphia on his way back from the Telluride Festival.
Also he’ll be doing a guest spot with Irish band Altan at the Hollywood Bowl in LA on July 29th before playing at Newport R.I. on August 5th.
Plans for a series of Dublin gigs in October 2001 will be announced in early July

Due to the continuing anxiety surrounding foot and mouth disease, Paul’s Killarney show set for April 7th, has been postponed until June 9th. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by this outbreak.

Site Update March 26th 2001

The proposed tour of the US has been put back. The release of “Oh, What a World” has caused more of a stir than anticipated! As a result it made sense to extend the itinerary, timing problems meant that we just couldn’t add dates at the beginning or end, and so a reluctant decision has been taken to postpone the dates so that a new itinerary can be put in place, The Houston Show will go ahead as planned (see below). Paul is very disappointed by this decision but hopes that when it does come together the wait will have been worth worthwhile.
That was the bad news. On a more positive note there have been some other interesting developments.
Paul has been in the studio mastering the recently discovered “Liberty Hall” tapes and we will be releasing a CD in the very near future for sale from the web site.
In addition there will soon be a very cool piece of news……(but not yet!!)

Finally, Paul’s 2001 US tour is in the final stages of organization. Beginning with a confirmed date at the Houston Texas Arts Festival, the weekend of 27th thru 29th April
Paul is planning to play further shows with his band in Boston, NYC, Philly, Washington DC and Baltimore with a further trip solo to Chicago, San Fransisco and LA all in the first two weeks of May before he goes to Cuba to play in Havana. Dates will appear on the tour dates page as soon as they are finally confirmed.

Welcome Here Kind Tapes!
Whilst trawling though the archives yer man came across the following gem, a recording of the first concert Paul did to launch his album ‘Welcome Here Kind Stranger’ in 1978. The concert was in Liberty Hall, Dublin in the summer of that year and was recorded direct to tape by Brian Masterson. A Stellar band consisted of Andy Irvine on mandolin, harmonica, hurdy-gurdy and vocals, Donal Lunny on bouzouki, Matt Molloy on flute, Liam O’Flynn on uileann pipes, Paddy Glackin on Fiddle and Noel Hill on concertina and made for an amazing evening. This is the first time these tapes have come to light since the recording was made. Paul is considering releasing a live album of this concert in the not too distant future. Here’s a taste.

PAUL’S MOVIE DEBUT ! ( you’re kidding?)
Happy New Year to all correspondents! Hope the Christmas break has restored your batteries. December was pretty busy for me. On 6th I went to Cuba to meet up with Bonnie Raitt and some friends for what turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and creatively stimulating periods in years. Hosted by Ned Sublette and jointly put together by Sean Barlow and Banning Eyre of Afropop and Ned, what followed was a fortnight of some of the most amazing music there is to hear on the planet. I’ve always been a fan of Latin music, especially where it meets the music of Africa. My songs have had strains and undercurrents running through them for years from the tango feel of ‘Crazy Dreams’ through the crazy hybrid West African / Paraguayan groove of ‘The World Is What You Make It’ on to the Brazilian melodic feel of ‘Love Hurts’ on the new record. So to hear so much Cuban music and be able to slot into that culture from the inside was a thrill of a lifetime.
Starting off in Havana, the first blast was an afternoon party at the home of Barbarito Torres, the laoud ( Cuban lute) player from the Buena Vista Social Club. Inviting several of his musician friends from the city, we had a remarkable session where everyone, including Bonnie and myself contributed songs and instrumental pieces. A great day where I got to feel first-hand the intensity of the Cuban musical tradition.
Shortly after that we met with Carlos Varela one of Cuba’s best known and talented singer-songwriters. Bonnie had met him on a previous trip but it was my first time. Carlos showed us round the city and introduced us to a Havana that the tourists never see..a birthday party at a friend’s house, a dinner in a great ‘paladar’ ( restaurant in a private house..a feature of life in Havana), a local club where we heard some wonderful ‘Son’ and ‘Bolero’ singing. Carlos and I seemed to hit it off from the word go. A gregarious and gracious man, he asked me to come back and do a concert with him. I can’t wait.
We went out of town for four days which took us to Matanzas, home of the Rumba, where we met with some of Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, the legendary rumba ensemble, and were privileged to attend a Santeria ceremony in the back yard of a private home. Here we were treated to some amazing percussion on the sacred drums, this time getting a feel for the African side of Cuban culture and hearing songs and dances unchanged from when the slave ships did their dirty work many generations back. Under a full moon and a clear sky in warm weather this was magical.
On then to Cienfuegos for more singing and music and eventually back to Havana where the Havana Jazz festival was getting under way. Over the course of the next week Chu Chu Valdes, NG La Banda, Bambolero and many other great bands left my head reeling. It was good too to meet up again with ND, the director of the Cuban dance extravaganza Havana Nights, who took us down to see the show in its final rehearsals. What a trip! I definitely will go back and the sooner the better.
Regulars to the site will know I was supposed to play a gig on Dec 30th with Tommy Peoples, the legendary fiddler from Donegal who was in the original Bothy Band back in the 70s and with whom I made two records back in that era ( see ‘former Paul Brady incarnations’ on the discography page) . However we had our once-in-five-years major snow fall in Ireland and all roads to Donegal were cut off so I couldn’t make it from Dublin and had to cancel. Apologies to all those who had bought tickets. Hopefully we can re-schedule it as I really want to play with Tommy again.
So it’s 2001. Already shaping up to be interesting. First great news is that Paul Brady CDs are at last going to be available in North America! I have just done a deal with US label, Compass Records , to release ‘Oh What A World’ there in Feb /Mar 2001 with the rest of the albums coming out a little later, the first being ‘Hard Station’ due in April. Compass Records, based in Nashville, is a progressive and eclectic label with stylistically a very diverse group of artists from the worlds of Folk, Jazz, Soul and Contemporary Popular music. Just the home for Paul Brady, I believe. One of the likely developments from this association is that I will more than likely do some shows in USA this year , something I’ve wanted to do for ages and something I know from the guest book that a lot of you have been wanting too. More news as this develops.
More immediately, I’m off to New York on Jan 11th to do a cameo role and sing a Gaelic song in a Matthew Barney film, part of his Cremaster series. Matthew is one of the USA’s most celebrated multi-media artists and I’m really looking forward to the experience. . Previous cameo-rollers in Matthew’s films were Norman Mailer, Ursula Andress and Patti Griffin so I’m in august company. You might well ask how did this come about. Jonathan Bepler who is composing the film score was a fan of my singing on the 1976 Andy Irvine / Paul Brady album. It’s amazing how things come around again. Again more news as this develops.. I’m off now to get a Hollywood agent.
After New York, I’m off to Nashville to meet with the Compass Records people and do some writing and finally I fly home Jan 28th.

News Update December 4th 2000
Paul was back writing again last week in his studio with the hugely talented Australian singer and recording artist Tina Arena, also with Pam Sheyne who’s originally from New Zealand , now living in London and who has already written with Tina. Paul first met Tina when they both appeared on Kenny Live, the Irish TV show, in the mid 90’s. This most recent meeting led to two days of sheer fun resulting in a new song ‘My Happy Accident’.
Next stop for Paul is a trip to Cuba on Dec 4th for a two week musical safari holiday where he meets up with, among others, long time friend and collaborator, Bonnie Raitt. This is his first trip to Cuba and being a huge fan of Cuban music and song he is well up for it. He may even get a dive or two in as it’s been over a year since he last had a chance to indulge in his scuba diving passion. Then it’s back to Ireland on Dec 20th for a quiet Christmas with family and finally New Year in Donegal where he plays a special rare gig with Tommy Peoples, the great Donegal fiddler, with whom Paul recorded a couple of now legendary records back in the mid-seventies (see ‘former Paul Brady Incarnations’ on the discography page of the website). Part of the Frankie Kennedy Winter School set up by the group Altan to commemorate their late founder member, this occasion also features a concert by Hothouse Flower, Liam O’Maonlai with Steve Cooney on Dec 29th and two gigs by Altan on 1st and 2nd Jan.

We are very pleased to say that we are now in a position to make available via mail-order all Paul‘s currently available CDs. This will soon extend to include his songbooks ’Nobody Knows‘ and ’Songs And Crazy Dreams‘ and the long-form video ’Echoes And Extracts‘ (seventy minutes of live performance and interviews). For the many people asking where can they find ’Arthur McBride‘ and ’The Lakes Of Pontchartrain‘ these are now on Paul‘s 1999 best of CD also titled ’Nobody Knows‘. Clicking on the CDs icon at the top of any page will lead you to the ’
shopping area. Clicking on an individual item on that page leads you to its
order form. In the future from time to time we will be adding other items. One distinct possibility is the mid eighties live album ’ Full Moon‘ which has been unavailable since the early 90‘s and which Paul is planning to re-master in the near future. Other projects will come on stream regularly.
It‘s been a busy summer. After touring since May to promote the new album ’Oh What A World‘, mid-August saw Paul in New York working with Carole King, who is presently recording new material for her new album. Carole was recording ’Monday Without You‘, written by herself, Paul and Mark Hudson. Paul played keyboards and acoustic guitar and sang back-up vocals. Also playing were celebrated Nashville songwriter, Gary Burr (acoustic guitar and vocals) and producer and songwriter Mark Hudson (electric guitar and vocals). The next morning Steven Tyler of Aerosmith came into studio and gave a cameo performance singing a counter melody to Carole. The song sounds great and is sure to be a standout track on her new record. The next evening Carole, Paul, Gary and Mark wrote and demo-ed a new song ’I Don‘t Know‘, which at this moment looks set to make the album too. A hugely enjoyable and productive two days.
Paul is now getting ready for the last series of dates of the year. Beginning in the UK on the 30th October he tours (see tour dates) through Nov 9th, coming home to Ireland for three shows in Cork and Dublin between the 15th and 17th of November. He travels to Denmark for two shows on the 24th and 26th Nov. A new single ’I Believe In Magic‘ is being released on October the 27th in UK and Ireland to coincide with the tour. This features a remix of the track from the album ’Oh What A World‘, a live band recording of the song and a remastering from the vinyl of an old recording (1979) of Paul singing the Hank Williams song ’You Win Again‘. Coinciding with the single release is a promotional video featuring the August performance at the Caherciveen festival .
One last project before going on tour is to record an Irish language version of the ’Lakes Of Pontchartrain‘ for the follow up to the CD ’Éist, Songs in their native language‘ called ’Éist Arís‘ on the Dara record label. The new version is called ’Bruach‘ Loch Phontchartrain‘ and was translated into Irish by Prionnsias Ó Maonaigh, father of Máiréad Ní Mhaonaigh from the group Altán. We will let you know when this is due for release.
Finally, discussions are still ongoing with several US record companies to provide a long-term home at retail for Paul‘s music in USA. Don‘t forget, however, that you can always buy any Paul Brady releases from this site.
